The primary goal of copy editing is to improve the overall quality of the writing, by ensuring that the content is well-organized, free of errors and written in a clear and concise manner.


  • One complete pass through the manuscript/document

  • Review line by line, making changes to syntax and word choice as needed

  • Correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling

  • Correct capitalization, hyphenation, formatting

  • Ensure consistency in style and voice

  • Suggest changes to structure or flow of sentences, where needed

  • Prepare a style sheet, which is a reference guide listing distinct terms and proper nouns; also for specific formatting and style choices

  • Flag problematic biases in language

Proofreading is the final round of editing before publication. The primary goal of proofreading is to spot any mistakes that may have slipped through the cracks, along with correcting typos or formatting errors.

  • Fix incorrect word choice or usage
